College of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad is situated at Sattur between Hubli & Dharwad, in the northern tip of Karnataka, with a population of more than a million is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka after Bangalore and is known as a cultural and educational center. Dharwad is well connected by rail, road and air from cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi etc and enjoys excellent climate all through the year. The S.D.M. College of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad situated in a picturesque surrounding along the main drive (Pune-Bangalore National Highway No.4) between Dharwad and Hubli on a 40 acre campus, provides the ideal academic ambience, is pollution free since its away from the city and has ample campus accommodation for students and recreation facilities. S.D.M. College of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad attracts students from all over the country. The college building spans about 1,40,000 sqft, houses 9 full-fledged departments with an attached medical wing, which is unique.

A 50 bed craniofacial unit and an implantology unit are distinctive departments in our hospital. It has an excellent patient attendance with 400-600 patients seeking treatment each day. The College is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore and is recognised by the Dental Council of India. It has become a centre of excellence, not only because of its unique architectural style, but also because of glorious academic achievements including ranks and gold medals secured by the students. It has been accredited with five stars by NAAC, a unit of University Grants Commission. The Dental school offers undergraduate and post-graduate courses in all the dental specialties and a certificate course in Dental Mechanics.

BACHELOR OF DENTAL SURGERY (BDS)

Eligibility for admission

Candidates who have passed the two-year Pre-University Examination of Karnataka’s Pre-University Board (or equivalent qualifying examination of other recognised boards) with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects are eligible for admission to the first year. Candidate shall have obtained not less than 50% of the aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together, and a pass in the English language in the qualifying examination, or any other examination recognised as equivalent by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru (Bangalore), Karnataka. Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) students or students of any other categories notified by the government shall be given a relaxation of 10% in the aggregate marks required for eligibility.

In case of admission on the basis of competitive entrance examination similar eligibility as above applies. In addition, the candidate must be ranked in the entrance examination’s merit list by securing not less than 50% marks in it. SC/ST students and students of any other categories notified by the government shall be given a relaxation of 10% in the aggregate marks required for eligibility through the competitive entrance examination.

The candidate shall have completed the age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete this age on 31st December of the calendar year in which he/she seeks admission.

Duration of the Course

The BDS programme is of four years duration with 240 teaching days in each academic year plus one year of compulsory rotatory inernship. During this period, the student is required to be engaged in full-time study at the institution.

Students selected by the Government on the basis of their performance at the competitive entrance test conducted by the State Govt. Seats include historically disadvantaged communities, categorized as scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and other backward classes (SC/ST/OBC).

ii)

Comed-K seats

55%

This includes:

  1. Linguistic Tulu Minority (20% seats)
  2. General Merit (35% of seats)

Students selected by the Comed-K on the basis of their performance at the competitive entrance test conducted by a consortium of private Engineering, Medical & Dental Colleges of Karnataka.

iii)

NRI/Management seats

20%

Students selected on the basis of qualifying examination performance and performance in interview.

Eligibility

  • A candidate for admission to the MDS course must have a BDS degree from a college and university recognised by the Dental Council of India, New Delhi, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru (Bangalore) and the Dental Council of India.
  • Candidates not possessing a recognised dental qualification for the above purpose should secure the prior approval of his/her qualifications by the Dental Council of India prior to admittance to the MDS course.

Duration of the Course
The MDS course is of three years duration and students are required to be enrolled as full-time candidates.
